This will be my first actual RR so be gentle. You all know me as Nomadicfireman, aka-The guy with Bruce, aka-The guy with the monkey, aka-The guy with CBAT. This trip will be with a fellow named Chuck. He missed out on this ride back in 07 due to his Goldwing being in he shop so I thought we would retrace with a few changes. Below is the link to the fist ride.

http://www.twtex.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20840

We met at the Y in Oakhill at 0730
Chuck has his own business and rides a 06 Goldwing with 86000 miles on the clock. I'm an Austin firefighter and I am riding an 09 ConcoursABS with 10000 miles. Notice the monkey made the switch.

We ended up stopping at every Walmart along the way. Either for fuel or various assundries. These fine ladies retold stories of the "old days" when they used to ride. Pretty sure they were hogs:lol2:, the bikes I mean!!
IMG_0523.jpg

Chuck was having some issues with fuses. I'm one of those people that has no problems helping others with breakdowns but go nuts if it's my stuff.

We needed to eat in San Angelo. I followed my GPS(Gutteral positioning system), into downtown and found this great place. Food was excellent as well as the service.

Shameless attempt at photography
IMG_0532.jpg

The weather was great and we were enjoying the day

IMG_0538.jpg

We made our way to Roswell and stopped for fuel. A local told us about Farleys so we gave it a shot.

All you can eat ribs, good stuff!!

I had made reservations at the Motel6 in Ruidoso. Bruce and I stayed here during our Continental Divide trip and were very happy with the service. Tom, the general manager, remembered me and began recounting the CDR trip to others in the lobby. He is one of the friendliest people I have ever met and always went out of his way to make our stay a good one.
Hot water is good for our old bones.
IMG_0542.jpg

Tom let us park right up on the porch.
IMG_0543.jpg

I wanted to take 244 to Cloudcroft and beyond. I obviously missed the road. We went about 5 miles down this dirt road thinking it was 244 being worked on. I finally had enough and back tracked to 70 and found it, well marked btw. I SUCK!! We did get to see some wild horses, turkey and possibly a mexican wolf. Still checking on that.

If you have never ridden the road to Timberon, you are missing out. I'd be curious to hear from someone that has done the Dragons tail and this road to compare the two. The paved portion ends at this sign then goes into a neighbourhood and beyond.
IMG_0546.jpg

We did the road non-stop on the way down then stopped at Sunspot solar observatory and a lookout on the way back.

IMG_0551.jpg

Blatantly obvious we had no adult supervision
IMG_0555.jpg

IMG_0556.jpg

We then made our way to Pinion. Last ride we stopped at this store for refreshments. It's closed so bring some.
IMG_0558.jpg

We made our way back to Cloudcroft and tried Big Daddy's Diner, good stuff!
IMG_0559.jpg

After feeding the machines, we rode down 82 to Alamogordo then back up 70 to Ruidoso. 82 is the more scenic of the two.

We stopped at one of the Pistachio farms along the highway. Can't recall the name but the statue of the nut is a good landmark.
IMG_0567.jpg

These two shared a common bond. They're both nuts.
IMG_0569.jpg

We made our way back up 70 and stopped at the Inn of the Mountain Gods Casino. A little luck early but soon crashed.
IMG_0570.jpg

Supper at Chef Lupes in Ruidoso. Good stuff. I had omelettes, go figure. Chuck said his combo plate was very good.
IMG_0571.jpg

We decided to wash some of the dust off from our off-road adventure. Chucks helmet rolled off of his bike right when I snapped the picture.
IMG_0572.jpg

Day 3 we rode up to Ski Apache. What a great ride, even saw some elk.

IMG_0575.jpg

View from the lookout. 10000' and no wind that day.
IMG_0576.jpg

Tom, from the hotel, said we needed to check out the Spencer Theater. I wanted to just look around but they only offered tours that took over an hour, so we peeked around and left.

Next stop, Merchant Marine cemetary and Fort Stanton.

Here is a link to more info on the cemetary

And Fort Stanton

Really neat places to see surrounded by beautiful scenery.

IMG_0589.jpg

We went to the visitors center at the fort and watched a very good 10 minute video on the history and then made our way to Lincoln. We rode through town and decided to stop at the old courthouse/museum. Lots of history and folklore.

IMG_0595.jpg

Billy The Kid bullet hole. Cool stuff!!

IMG_0597.jpg

IMG_0598.jpg

Those Masons are everywhere!!
IMG_0599.jpg

IMG_0600.jpg

We then made our way to Capitan, home of Smokey Bear Museum. We skipped the museum but not the cafe. Again, good stuff, good people.

Tom told us about White Oaks Mine and the "No scum allowed" saloon. There is no way we would miss this. We made our way and found an interesting little mining town with a closed saloon :eek2:
We had a look around and got some pics. It's amazing how they got materials back to this area to build these structures.

This building was for sale. Any takers?

Next- Don't judge me!

Let me explain!!
IMG_0609.jpg

Before you judge me let me explain. A while back, 3 of us rode to Granbury. I let one of my "buddies" ride my bike. He knew my all time high on this rocket ship was 145. He got to 150. Now any upstanding biker type would understand that you can't let your buddy go faster on your bike than you, right? Right after I got the shot and slowed down a sheriffs car went by :eek2:. I also noticed after I looked at the pic that I had a gear left:lol2:.

We had plenty of daylight left so we made our way back to Ruidoso. I then decided to ride some of the interior roads in town and also a couple of dead end roads on our maps.
IMG_0611.jpg

IMG_0612.jpg

Map showed a nice lake close by. Rode down and spoke to some folks from El Paso. They said the lake had just been stocked with over 7000 trout.
IMG_0614.jpg

IMG_0615.jpg

We made our way back into town and came across this guy. Looks like a real "easy rider".
IMG_0616.jpg

Gourmet supper
IMG_0617.jpg

Nice views from a road we found behind the hotel
IMG_0618.jpg

IMG_0619.jpg

Finally headed home on Friday. Not many pics. Got stuck behind this trooper in New Mexico for about 30 miles. Maybe he was our "adult supervision"
IMG_0620.jpg

This is Chucks wife's name. Had to stop.
IMG_0621.jpg

Pretty uneventful on the way home. It was a great trip, about 1700 miles. The bikes did great. One last pic of beautiful Texas hill country, Hwy 71 between Llano and Marble Falls.

If you have never ridden the road to Timberon, you are missing out. I'd be curious to hear from someone that has done the Dragons tail and this road to compare the two. The paved portion ends at this sign then goes into a neighbourhood and beyond.

I rode from Cloudcroft to Timberon yesterday and the Tail of the dragon last fall.
The 2 rides are really apples and oranges,
Dragon is much tighter. Trees and rocks much closer to roadway and sight lines much shorter. Also much more annoying traffic. Although you don't have to dodge free ranging cattle on the Dragon.
