Riding a vintage?

Being a car guy also, one of the things I see is that old cars have a huge "WOW, Look at that" factor even to non car types. On they other hand vintage bikes, not so much. Bikes typically appeal only within the rank and file of the Motorcycle community, and generally to a narrow group to which the time frame matches. Guess we need to take some of these to the Harvest Classic this year.

The first generation GL's were meant by Honda to be some of the first sport-touring bikes and have loads of power without all the extra weight and plastics of their ever-larger decendants...she sounds like a Porche Boxter when I wind her up above 5 grand...redline is 8500 and she has a really toothy snarl up in the rev range...:rider:

Well plastics as we know today didn't exist then. That market was created by Craig Vetter. The first GW's with plastics from Honda even used Vetter framed mounted fairings until Honda copied the design and did it themselves. Then everyone else followed and a new market was born.

I went to Sharp's Honda in Amarillo and rode the first Gold Wing to ever arrive in Amarillo. It was nice, but at 23, it didnt turn Me on. I returned the bike, climbed back aboard My 73 Yoshimura Z-1 and went looking for Vettes.:rider:

1961 600cc it was brought over here by a military service guy coming home before I got it.
it has metric speedo and surprising it has 12volt charging system. I am told that it was probably an escort or police version to have the stock 12v electrics.

If you ever get the chance to ride an "Earls Fork" motorcycle it's a hoot. No front end dive on braking - as a matter of fact it rises up when braking hard.
The stopping forces on the rotating wheel try to twist the front swing arm so there is no front end dive. maybe this is why they are so popular on sidecar rigs?
 
The active geometry on leading-link forks does a far superior job at dealing with the stresses and steering requirements of a sidecar-equipped bike without eating front tires every few tankfuls of gas in anything but extended highway driving.

...and, yes, no more brake diving.
 
Hi all! I moved from OKC to Houston about 7 months ago along with my XS650 bobber. I had searched for a bike to bob on my own, found this one and couldn't pass up this excellent <compared to any attempt I could've made lol> build.

Kickstart only. I've since removed all guages and rear fender so I avoid mud puddles! It's a blast up to about 65 then I start to day dream about a 6 speed or the 750cc top end conversion...

My other ride is a KTM 990R.

Man did not see this till now. EnduroRdr I have a project Beemer with the earls front end that I need to get to the house to restore. It doesn't run so it will need alot of attention. Drew

Great idea SL I have a KZ250 I am needing to fix a couple things on. Would be perfect. Could be on Sundays so more could attend. Nice easy pace with someone at the tail end to pick up parts that vibrate off.:rofl: Drew
 
Just got the rebuilt carbs on my '81 Viragosaurus, and cleaning it up tomorrow. I had been riding the '05 Triumph for the last year, and it's gone to a new owner. Love my Virago!!!
So, where's the pie run for the Antiques?
 
I am a new member of the vintage club, but I suck at moving pics. I just today bought the 79 XT500 on the for sale page, if someone wants to throw a pic up for me, I just can't get the hang of it. Anywho...vintage baby.:thumb:

I think flickr can also suspend your account if there are too many views to get you to pay $$$.
