I've been riding bikes for 12 years. Still have my Indian but recently bought a KTM 690 Enduro R...it seems to be more complicated to find good dirt roads. I notice people posting maps or files I am not familiar with. What is the best way for a newbie to find dirt roads or trails ? I have ridden around the sam Houston trails and roads, very fun. You are going to love dual sport riding.Check out All Trails app, it has lots of cool riding trails.
A bit out of the way, you canā€™t go wrong with going to Arkansas.
Have FunšŸ˜Ž

Most of us use a GPS or a GPS phone app. The files you're probably seeing are .GPX files that work with those systems. I prefer a dedicated moto GPS.

There's also the go out and explore til you're lost method, but you still have to have an idea of where the dirt roads are. Some counties do a lot of paving, others don't.

I like Ride With GPS as a good, free website to view and create .gpx files. It's bicycle oriented but works well. I've even found some routes there by using the search function, searching for gravel. I export the files to my phone and use the OsmAnd app.

Also, check out Gravelmap: https://gravelmap.com/browse#9/29.7858/-95.8245 and Texas Gravel Roads: https://stormgis.maps.arcgis.com/apps/View/index.html?appid=b8781dd1d4b1406bbf62827c65241e41&extent=-99.7819,28.5091,-97.1040,29.9959. These can provide you with some resources to find gravel roads, though they're not 100% accurate.

Check out this west Houston DS riders thread. Lots of Houston area people finding dirt.
