I think some of you know Billy Click, and other guy is James Gunter. There's folks helping them but they are the guys spearheading this operation.

"Well one more day of laboring on the trails. Just about finished up all 40 plus miles of the west side, the rain held off one more day. What rain we did get cooled things off and helped pack down the sand. The prospect of getting the trails open is brighter than ever . Tha nks Anthony and Jeff for the help today"

I've known Billy since the early 70's and his TM400 days.

Thanks for this pic. Just what I envisioned. Hop it flows out to right side but of course, it will end up a giant lake invariably.

Sunday 9-15-24 Workday
0900 at Kelly's Pond
All right we will have a final sweep of the trails this coming Sunday 9-15-24. By this weekend the trail work should be complete and we will be turning it over to the Forest Service to do there Trail Survey.
Our Sunday workday will require a good turn out to go over the 50 miles of Trails, looking for
Exposed roots and
Heavy faceslappers
Folks by Sunday the trails will have been repaired, the Culvert fixed and Bridges made ready.
All that's left to do is give the trails a once over looking for dangerous roots hanging in the trail and vegetation that's hanging over in the trail.
I believe it's doable in one day with enough help.
4wheelers or small side by side will help carry the tools and drinking water. Bring your bike to follow and work the trail.
Should not need any chainsaws or electric hedge trimmers as we are just giving the trails a quick once over.
Tools needed >>>
Machete
Grubbing hoe , Pulaski or Mattock
Ax
Loppers
Let's get it done, also a VSA, Volunteer Service Agreement. You can find it on the Sam Houston Trails Coalition website.
Come on out, hope to see you This Sunday

Work looks great! Definitely fixing things up nice. Hats off to the whole crew of workers!

Last time I rode out at the SHNF before taking a long time off of riding, so back in probably '02, I am pretty sure we rode the Lake loop. I don't know when it got closed. I had stopped riding much by about '01, and just sporadically in '02... so I may be mixing up years.

I keep saying I want to get out and do trail work with that crew, but every time they have a work-day, its a day I am already otherwise obligated. It'll happen at some point!

This notice is from April 2021:

"Bridge 1 on Lake Loop was damaged during the RX burn and is closed to traffic of any kind. Please do not ignore the closed trail or bridge signage for everyone's sake including your own safety.
Thank you"

And now after all the storms, part of it even caught a small twister the work needed is unbelievable!!

Ok! 9/15 might be doable for me., a little early in the week yet, but I think I should be free. I'm going to at least fill out the service-agreement form-thing.

For tools, I only have a small hand-saw for cutting face slappers, I'll bring that. I can prob borrow a mattock as well. Gotta talk to a neighbor.

well, I posted in the torcs thread, but it affects this too.. separated my shoulder.. gonna be out of commission a while for doing any kind of activity. bummed.. right as the weather is about to start cooling off too.

I feel for ya. I have needed to get mine cut on for over a year now. I went for some alternative methods which worked for a few months but now I am considering it again. The down time for riding, hunting, or any physical activity is brutal though.

Ouch, heal up soon!

"Well it's Friday the 13th , some folks mite be troubled by that, but not the work crew out on the west side MUT. Sunday marks one month since we we allowed to start rehab on the trails we should be complete today of covering all 40 plus miles. In my personal opinion, the trails are in better shape than in several yrs. Lot of chronic bad spots have been dry enough to repair and lots of water control structures have been fixed. Thank mother nature for Giving us a break and everyone who pitched in to accomplish the giant task. With any luck at all the trail should be open this weekend..cheers"

From a hard working volunteer, hope he's right!
