Sam Houston NF

I'm running them on the front now and I'll be ordering the rear next week! So I'm trying them too. Front has been on for several hundred miles, works fine for my needs.
I hope they workout. I'm tired of dropping $400+ on tires that are aggressive enough, but not sketchy on the pavement.

Hey everyone , The Workday for Saturday
1-11-25 is still on
All of our work is located close to roads so we're not going to need any 4wheelers, bikes, or sxs.
Should not be a bad hike to work areas and it will save any excess wear on trails, bikes or other equipment.
Still meeting after the 9am Sam Houston Trails Coalition meeting. We'll divide up there and head out. See y'all at the meeting.

"Hello Billy Click:
📷

This past year in the Sam Houston National Forest was like no other, with multiple weather events that wreaked havoc and resulted in all trails being closed. Within a few months, thanks to the hard work and perseverance of volunteers like yourself, the majority of trails have reopened and are being enjoyed by all. Thank you for your contributions to this amazing success story!
Records show that you had 222 volunteer hours logged in 2024. This is for the US Forest Service fiscal year which runs Oct 2023 – Sept 2024.
Your lifetime volunteer hours, going back to 2016, shows a contribution of 1432 hours! The US Forest Service assigns a value of $31.80/hour to volunteer time. For lifetime hours logged, you have donated $45537.6 towards keeping the trails open and enjoyable for fellow trail users. Congratulations and thank you!
The February Coalition meeting is all about VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION. The Sam Houston Trails Coalition and the US Forest Service will honor 2024 Volunteers and Lifetime Achievers. Please join us for this fun event. We have much to celebrate this year!
When: February 8, 2025 9am – 10:30 am
Where: Gulf Coast Trades Center"

Heard the special meeting went well today, good to hear. We need some accountability for sure.

Been few years since I’ve been out here east side was crazy muddy! Tomorrow I’ll try the west side.

As a Motorized Member of the Sam Houston Trails Coalition, we wanted to let you know about the status of Multi-Use Trails closure.

This past Saturday we had a workday to check trail conditions and cut downed trees and debris off the MUT. With over 10-15 inches of rain in the last week and a little wind mixed in, it was evident that trail has sustained new erosion damage caused by large amounts of swift running water. Although not as severe as last summer’s storms it will take at least a couple of weeks for the trails to dry out, and to get equipment in to start repairs.

Without going into great detail, this is a heads up that we have recommended to the FS that the Multi-Use Trails remain closed through the Memorial Day weekend. Once the trails are dry enough to work it will be a matter of a few weeks before the trail repairs can be completed. Be on the lookout for volunteer opportunities when the workdays begin.

Thanks for your support of the trails and our volunteer efforts.

James Gunter, Motorized Director,Vice President

John Maldonado, Equipment Operator, Workday Leader

Jeff Heller, MUT Project Manager

With the heavy rain we have has there been discussion of building water bars on the trails to divert the flow? Have they ever been tried here? I see them all over the trails out west, CO, OR, NM etc.

Water bars/sweet jumps, I would have thought they would have been there a long time ago if not already there.

They are. My 2 cents, forest is sugar sand, when they repair they just drag sugar sand back on the trail. the trails are so worn, they're like a funnel, it's where the water runs off. Same spots cause problems over and over.

Every time there's a heavy rain event. Pictures from Sand

y trail this past Sunday. In top picture looks like a good place for water bar.

That could be exciting if coming from the other direction and you didn't know it was there. :flip:

This is a follow up to the May Annual Members Meeting Board of Directors (BOD) Elections.

At the meeting, the following individuals were re-elected to their Director positions:

  • · At-Large Director: Linda Secrist
  • · Equestrian Director: Cindy Mettes
There were no nominees for Cycling Director. Therefore, at this week’s BOD meeting, Rick Valdez was appointed Cycling Director.

The Board also voted on Officer roles for this year:

  • · President: Linda Secrist
  • · Vice President: Rick Valdez
  • · Secretary/Treasurer: Cindy Mettes
  • · Membership Chair: Lori Moseley
It is with sadness that we announce the resignation of James Gunter as Motorized Director. He has decided to leave the Board to focus on his business and personal endeavors. The Coalition thanks him greatly for his leadership and service. We wish him the best in all his future undertakings.

The BOD has appointed Jeff Heller as interim Motorized Director until the end of the term in May 2026. Jeff has been a respected advocate for the MUT trails and the project manager overseeing the Westside MUT rehabilitation efforts. We are excited for the skills, knowledge, and experience he brings to the Director role and we look forward to his contributions in this new capacity.

Please join me in welcoming Jeff to the Board and in offering your support to the entire BOD team. You can reach Directors and Officers via the email addresses on the Coalition website “ABOUT” page. The link can be found below.

So, Once Was Good, what're the odds you'd be up for a ride-day/event where you'd lead my slow self around the SHNF trails. I haven't been in years, don't have any locals to go ride with these days (all my old-time riding buddies sold their bikes years ago) and going by yourself is usually not a great idea, well.. not for me anyway! lol It would prob have to be a Friday and I'll have to get vacation approved, so it can't be a spontaneous 'day of' thing for me.
