Smokey Bear 🐻 Cloudcroft NM Ride, Annual Ride Reports

2019...We have around 10 bikes . I brought my Strom and found another ”heavy” rider with a BMW GS . We will ride together to get the feel of the country. Sander and the other duel sport riders will be taking a little more technical round
Here a couple pics to start it off
64 degrees, 51 low tonight
These pics at the Spruce Cabins in Cloudcroft.

Thanks for showing me what I'm missing. Brian, did you ride the Strom over, or is that your truck and trailer rig?

Hey SouthTex, I saw your post about 107 index and felt it was my duty to report it was a little cool walking to the bar so I wore my hoodie last night.

Nice reporting. Keep it coming.:coffee:

Are you doing those rocky trails on your Strom?

If so, impressive.
I did two "trails" as you see on the pictured signs in the above pics. These are 2 track for atvs no wider than 50 inches. Both were down hill grades. One oth the trails I got off the path and was funneled into a steep grade where I had to let the bike over. No big deal, and sander came to the rescue and we got it picked up on the slope and he told me where to go to pick up the trail. And yes it was difficult on a 500 pounder. Not much fun so will stay away from those. I didn't get any pics of these trails in progress thru the trail because I was so busy and didn't really have much of an opportunity to stop for pics.

The pic with the single gs rider Pete was an accident we got ourselves in where we went down a steep forest service road. ( The one with the wrecked honda at the end of laboriacita road where it picked up forest 329). We then discovered we had twice as difficult ascent. We were stuck and in trouble. We walked back up the way we came and really planned our path carefully. I was not confident I could do it safely so pete helped me clutch walk my strom back up bit by bit. Pete was more experienced but was equally nervous and decided to role the dice and went for the ascent on 2 wheels. I was amazed how well he kept up a strong momentum and how he picked his line. We did my bike first so we had by then taken that slope apart piece by piece. No damage to either bikes and we kept our heads and took our time. I can say we are bonded by the experience because it was a real pickle we had gotten ourselves into. I can say this and we both agreed, god gave us the insite to keep ourselves safe and for this, a really amazing thing happened after we got to a good spot on the asphalt to stop. WE SAW A BLACK BEAR CUB RUN ACROSS THE ROAD ABOUT 50 YARDS AHEAD OF US. Truly fortunate site.

Ps this stuff is 8500 feet or better. I've been breathing hard all week . It took 1full day or more for my chest to stop having that aching feeling.

Next week I will add the boring details to the pics. It's too difficult to add comments with the tablet computer.

It is, ridiculous.

I just saw two examples of Brian's magnificent V-Stroming. Truly amazing, I know lots of riders that wouldn't attempt some of the sections he cleaned on dirt bikes.

This is one of the trails he conquered.

Note this only shows the easiest section.

Oh crap, did I do that?

Friday Aug 2nd
Saw turkeys cross my path with pullets. They are more round than our skinny lankey ones at home. Presumably more feathers for insulation. Sitting outside and uploading pics. The temp is 66 . the weekend crowd has arrived . been vacancy all week but full now.

Tried to go to timberron pinion weed and back but discovered it didn't go through via pavement south of timberron. I met a Africa twin rider (Keith from Midland Tx. ) that said it gets pretty knarly past there and have to cross a couple rivers to get to the pinon highway. Too little time, too many clouds and too much terrain to do it so went back same way I came and took pics of the sun spot observatory. Later saw Leo' coming and already had 1 stopped . It was a CC p.d,. A county unit and probably a state h.patrol so good thing I was going the 35mph when I saw them. Would probably have been busted for sure. Those twisty were the best riding ever for me.

Will post the last pics a little later. Last day day and raining pretty good. The window was 9 to one pm and I did it but back pouring now again. I ame the last one left and leaving in morning back to reality. Hope you enjoyed my pics whether you wanted to or not😆

PS I stopped by toejam's place who was not there but did introduce my self to the woman of the house ,Chris. (howdy👋).

CC travel question. Have only been there once and it was from I-10 at Ft Stockton up through Pecos etc. Bad road conditions and oil field traffic have me looking for a better route. Starting point is SE TX so heading west is a huge part of the trip. Suggestions.

Yes I overnighted at ft stockton w friends and saw that highway. Google maps said it was only 10 extra min going to cc via el Paso and almagordo nm.

Tomorrow I'm going straight thru 11, 12 hrs to George west via el Paso and freeway again. So much easier and no getting lost when your driving tired.

Trip to Ruidoso New Mexico on sat 3rd.

Some good eatin in these mt pastures.

Disco taco. No one spoke English so used my caveman Spanish and full combo plates including chili relleno for 8 bucks. Kind of a local joint. With construction workers etc.
