South East TX TARA DS Ride, Saturday March 18 (2017)

:tab I don't know what the group riding experience level for all the riders will be, but I would like to share one simple rule for group riding (street and dirt).

:tab Keep track of the rider behind you!!

:tab This generally means waiting at each intersection/turn until you see the rider behind you and you KNOW that rider has seen you!! The idea is that no matter how spread out the group gets, you don't lose people. If you have been riding for quite a while and have not seen the person behind you, stop and wait a minute. If you still don't see them, GO BACK. IF there is a problem, this should ideally result in the entire group coming back to the point of trouble so everyone can figure out what needs to be done to take care of the rider/bike having trouble.

:tab The other benefit of this rule is that each rider should realize they WILL NOT get left behind and should therefor run at a pace they are comfortable with. I hate seeing an inexperienced rider trying to keep up with faster riders only to get in over his/her head and then having an accident and potentially tearing up the bike and/or body!

:tab Having led a lot of rides, I know from experience that the worst people about ignoring this rule are the 2-3 people right behind the leader. I have often had to repeatedly stop and tell them to wait for the rider behind them because they want to take off with the leader the moment he/she goes.

:tab If folks can follow this one simple rule, it makes the ride better for everyone in the group.

:tab Okay, I lied, TWO rules, or really a sub rule to rule #1 ;-)

:tab IF you decide to drop off of your group, let someone know.

:tab I cannot tell you how many times I have been leading a ride and riders have decided to peel off and go their separate way without letting anyone else in the group know what they were doing. If everyone is following rule #1, this is a real pain!! It makes people wonder if there is a problem. I have literally spent hours in the rain with other riders looking for a missing rider only to eventually give up and find him back at the hotel enjoying a cold beer... Needless to say, he was not real popular with the rest of the group that evening... :twitch:

:tab It is real simple, get the attention of the rider in front of or behind you, stop and actually SPEAK to him to let him know you are bugging out. Don't just assume he knows what your head bobbing and arm waving mean if you are trying to let him know your intentions without using actual words ;-)

:tab This last issue is not a rule per se, but more of a courtesy issue. If you are a group leader and you stop to wait for the whole group to reassemble, don't take off the second the last rider shows up. Everyone else has had a few moments to sit, rest, maybe talk, and/or take care of any little issue they might be having. Give that last rider the courtesy of having a minute or two before you take off again. I promise that rider will appreciate it! I usually check with the last rider before I head out again if I am leading.

Excellent advice here. I will be expecting my group to keep to it. I'll be leading a faster paced group, but I won't be leaving anyone behind. I figure a cruising pace of 45-50 and a gettin' it pace of 60 or so from time to time. That's for the unpaved sections of course. I tend to keep it pretty reasonable on the pavement due to gearing and knobbie melting concerns.

See y'all tomorrow!

I've had several new folks contact me and I will take lead of this group. I want them to enjoy the ride plus I would like to take pictures as much as possible.
I have been part of a group before that was **** bent on breaking the speed of sound!:eek2: This was not an enjoyable ride and my friend said he would never do that again:giveup:. So I will make sure my group follows the basic rules or common courtesy of your fellow rider.
I have a list of things to talk about at the riders meeting. Kind of "JSA, Safety Tool Box Meeting" before we head out. The main thing is NOT to ride above your skill and not to leave the rider behind you! Tourmeister thanks for your input, it is greatly appreciated!

Glad to hear somebody else respects the folks living out in the country and taking time to take pictures. We have TORCS for the guys who think this is a race! HA Funny how they don't show up there.

Rob,

I'm gonna be at the Smiley's 9:00am. Should only take us about 20 minutes or so to get to Stubblefield Lake Rd., if you want to join me.

here I come!

Edit: Did not make it. Got almost to Tomball & the fogg was so thick I could not see. So, turned around.

It burned off by 9:30 or so and it was perfect riding conditions afterwards!!

Ian, thanks for leading! Daniel and I had a great time. We hit about 260 miles by the time we got home. I think that is his longest ride yet. He usually gets bored after a few hours and wants to head home. Not today though!

JMZ, WoodsGuy...Really? I guess it's times like these that you really find out who your Buds are.....:wary: Of course you know, pay backs ARE an exwife.:dude:

Thanks to everyone for riding today! It was definitely a memorable ride!
I will post an "After The Ride" report of today's events probably tomorrow.

The route was excellent, I ride that area all the time and still learned a couple of new roads. This is a great burger stop also! Downtown Bedias Tx, lol

Anyone know how the inured rider is doing? Bike make it home okay? Rider make it home?

The injured rider last we heard was at the hospital in Huntsville doing well. When the rider was being loaded into the ambulance he was in good spirits (as much as he could be). He maybe there for a day or two because of the injury. AAA picked the bike and delivered it to his home with out any problems.
A special thanks to MOTEX and his family for really stepping up to help manage all the details! Calling 911, AAA, coordinating pick up of the bike and belongings.
Also many thanks to all the other riders of this group for instantly banding together to help in anyway they could. It is nice to know that people will come together for a fellow rider!!

Please send "BornAgain" a message to let him and his family we are thinking of him!

He was in a lot of pain but still able to make jokes - no one's gonna be taking his man card. He handled it all like a Champ.

And then there was the PIT maneuver skillfully (and deservedly) performed on a pit bull. I started thinking about all those bicyclists later...what if their route had taken them on that road. Woulda been disastrous with no fast or adequate solution for the victim.

Jdsmetx, I called you 'Jim' all day and you never once corrected me! Thanks for leading the ride.

Sounds like quite the experience was had. Unfortunately, I had to miss it and look forward to the next one. Thanks for the after-ride reports!
