We where taken to school on selling motorcycles to a forum member in this case...
Being stupid and suffering from old guy syndrome... Totally self inflicted...
1. Do not leave the tag on it...
2. Date the title...
2(a).Selling to individuals not on TWT T's are crossed and l's are dotted to cover our six...
3. We have sold numerous bikes and never had a problem with toll road bills or any other legal issues...
Also  we have never been on N.T.T.A allegedly riding a 2013 Yamaha TW200 plate# 235C9R, vin# 1JA3AWE05DA140997 but "Someone" here did allegdly...
Something to ponder rather than batteries, KTM 's, Harley bashing, PPSS motorcycle purchases, not to mention oil&tire debates and last but not least correct number of miles to constitute a proper ride...
Rant over Carry On 😎

Very low indeed. Hopefully they will come forward and do the right thing.

At this point seeing as how plates & title weren't transferred we're
assuming there's no insurance coverage either...
Toll road bills are the least of  our concerns at this time...
Throwing shade or calling out a forum member is not how we care toroll...
Carry On 😎

I personally have bought and sold bikes here over the years. Never had a problem. I am sorry you ran across bad deal.

When you sell a vehicle, there is a part of the paperwork that you are supposed to file with the DMV letting them know you sold it. This is to protect you from exactly these kinds of issues when a buyer doesn't complete the title transfer. I cannot recall what it is called though  Is it the tear off part on the bottom of the title? My wife always handles these things so I never have to worry about them.

I once filed the paperwork showing that I sold the vehicle and still got toll bills. Luckily for me the new owner took care of it.

Form VTR-346.

I fill this out every time online the day of the sale. I had a few tolls show up on a sold bike and was able to have them easily transferred to new owner with proof of sale. It also will cover you liability wise. Pedro 2.0, I'd file one today if you haven't already done so.

Wow - Crappy situation for sure.
Appreciate you posting as a warning for all. This is especially timely for me as I reduce the herd

That sucks. In today's world you can't count on anybody to do the right thing. Cover your butt and move on.

Couple of years ago i sold a chinese scooter that wouldn't do 40mph to a buddy. He turned around and sold it on FB, neither of us did the transfer paperwork. Fast forward, I get a toll bill for the scooter on a Dallas toll road. Sucked it up, paid the bill, filed the form.
But what idiot takes a 40mph scooter on a toll road? smh

Same here with keeping the tags. Police will 100% let you go with a warning if you have a bill of sale on the same day you are riding it home without a tag on it.

I'm a complete luddite when it comes to toll regs and logistics. So what happens if you get this toll bill, and you legally don't own the vehicle anymore? Only toll roads I've ever driven are in OK. I've never had this tag thing you folks are talking about. I'm guessing there's some kind of fine print in the agreement that locks you into paying the fees regardless of who and when the tag passes a sensor...maybe? In a world where many actual criminals don't even get charged with crimes, it seems a little onerous that the toll police can nail you for fees when the vehicle isn't even yours anymore.

So, next question...what happens when you call or send them a letter or email that you don't even own the vehicle anymore and you tell them to stuff it? Does an AMC Pacer full of Seal Team Toll 6 operators show up, and I get in a shootout with my MP5...Yippee-Ki-Yay!...in front of my house? What tools do they have to use Big Brother tyranny to make you pay for tolls you did not do?

I think I get the suggestion that you remove this tracking tag/permit when you sell the vehicle...or do they also have the additional ability to track your license plate? I've noticed as I've driven by these toll and express lanes in the hellhole of DFW that you don't have to have a tag...I think...so apparently the license plate gets captured? So help a hillbilly understand the ramifications if one gives the middle finger to the man when they try to bill you for a vehicle you no longer own.

If you don't have a toll tag, then they'll bill the last registered owner through the license tag number. Otherwise they'll bill the toll tag that was last registered to the vehicle, which again is tied to the last registered owner.

They get you off the license plate. Name behind it gets the bill.

Couple of times I've gotten a notice for my bike when their reader picked 1 number wrong. They even have a picture! I just tell them what's up and photo of my bike. Worked so far. My bike has never been on a toll road.

Yeah, I kinda get that, but what power do they have to bend you over if you don't own the vehicle?...crater your credit score?...repossess your vehicle?...send a sniper team? Honestly, not being snarky here...LOL!...but I'm really curious to know how they can make you pay. I've also seen some posts about how someone toting a motorcycle in the bed of a pickup or such get billed on toll or express lane which seems unreasonable.

,
I one time got an unpaid toll notice from Dallas for one my BMW bikes. The pic they sent was only a partial plate and was obviously not a BMW.

Also got a nastygram from HCTRA regarding unpaid tolls from my “van”. The pics were my enclosed trailer plate. I guess my truck tag wasn’t read and they got a pix of the enclosed “van” plate.

Regarding OT - with past sales, I even canceled toll tag and removed vehicle from my account. Not sure that would help though if title wasn’t changed

After OP’s experience - I’m keeping plate no matter what.

They will go after your credit rating.

When I say remove the tag, I'm talking about the license plate. Of course I would remove the little tolltag, but I also keep the license plate when I sell a bike. Without that plate, then there is no way for it to come back to you with tolls.

Wow!...credit rating. That smacks of guilty until proven innocent. Like I said...I'm a luddite hillbilly, and I avoid those toll and express routes. If I lived in that environment I guess I might think differently. I tell ya, even when I have to go visit relatives in east TX when driving from the Abilene area, I've started going a southerly route to avoid DFW completely. I have the time and enjoy the more relaxed route. Now...you kids get off of my lawn! Thanks for that info.
