AUSTIN: TARA monthly dual sport adventure ride

I would potentially bypass the James River if I show up this weekend, but at this point I can't confirm.

Can't do this month ride, I am on call an riding that far is out of the question. Riding Sunday some oif the closer dirt spots for sure

Looking forward to the monthly ride this coming Saturday. Always wanted to do the James River route but the schedule didn't seem to align these last couple years. Can anyone confirm if there is a fuel stop somewhere in the middle portion of the route? I've done several of these rides, but always on a different bike it seems - AT, 701, GS, now a CRF300.
I will have an extra liter or two on hand in case.

Bike is pepped. Fresh oil and coolant. Fred tires gave her a little juju juice around the filter and sang her a song. Still debating final drive.

Anyone have the November route? I can't seem to find it in the big GPX file.

I think the route runs through Sandy Creek tomorrow? Live update from Choppa Steve in case y’all were wondering about the creeks. It’s fine, just watch the deep sediment in front of my bike in this pic. And after the second crossing heading north, this was the worst of the mud. Safe Travels….and watch the deer, the bucks are really moving, even in the middle of the day.

This public service announcement brought to you from my temporary office:

Made my first Saturday ride. Figured out that if you want to be the group lead you just have the be the only guy with a GPS and the file. Who knew? I figured I'd hang out in the back, try to keep up. Surely somebody knows where we're going? I did. And don't call me Shirley. Hey, Mike said "go fast". 20 minutes later he said "well, maybe not that fast". :)

Making it my mission to be at the Dec club night (despite it being in south Austin).

Came back the next weekend and explored some more dirt.

December ride turned out to be a blast!! We did a combo of Luckenbach and Castell/Llano looking to hit as many dirt roads as possible. Weather was perfect!! A group of us got back at at Red Horn Brewery at around 5pm so it was a long day! All the dirt roads were so fast and compacted, it was a blast to ride!! Want to send my best wishes to all my ADV Friends on the monthly ride. Have a blessed year ends and enjoy it because it has been a tough year for all. Looking forward to a new year full of adventures!! Cheers!

It been a sometime, what the route for April? Or we just improvise? Big bike small bike ??

April is the San Saba route, but that's not set in stone. Last I rode that there's was scarce little dirt. Im on a midsized bike myself.

Gonna hit the Texas Fandango in Fredericksburg on April 2nd actually. May go for one of these monthly routes on the next weekend though.

I am thinking about doing one of the routes tomorrow. Is anyone interested?

The Austin TARA (Texas Adventure Riders Association) Chapter sponsors a monthly dual sport adventure ride the first Saturday of every month. All riders are invited to attend.

We meet at 8:30 am at the Texaco gas station/convenience store, 18901 Hamilton Pool Road, Dripping Springs, 78620 (intersection of Hwy 12 and Hamilton Pool Rd/3238). Stands up at 9 am.

There is no designated ride leader for the monthly ride (i.e. no one is in charge). Riders self-organize into small groups and then enjoy a fun day in the Texas hill country.

We have two options for routes.

1. There are 12 different planned routes, one for every month of the year.
These planned routes do not always include dirt because of the distance we have to ride west from Austin to get to the dirt. The shorter pavement only routes include the best pavement to be found in the hill country (outside of the 3 Twisted Sisters). The routes that include dirt tend to be longer due to the distance we have to ride to get to dirt. Click here to go to the page with the gpx files for the monthly rides.

Jan: Wimberley, 126 miles, pavement only, 1 low water crossing
Feb: Luckenbach, 182 miles, some dirt
Mar: Willow City Loop, 174 miles, pavement only
April: San Saba, 226 miles, dirt
May: Fredericksburg, 229 miles, dirt
June: Johnson City, 124 miles, a little dirt, beautiful low water crossing
July: Marble Falls, 141 miles, pavement only
Aug: Round Mountain / Spicewood, 132 miles, dirt
Sep: Kendalia, 147 miles, some dirt, beautiful low water crossing
Oct: James River, 225 miles, dirt, largest water crossing in Texas (very slick)
Nov: Pontotoc, 222 miles, dirt
Dec: Burnet, 151 miles, pavement only

2. Your second choice is to pick one of the five dirt rides and ride it instead of the planned monthly route.
Ride 1 - San Saba, 229 miles
Ride 2 - Pontotoc, 222 miles
Ride 3 - Onion Creek, 197 miles
Ride 4 - James River, 225 miles
Ride 5 - Upper Sisterdale Road, 180 miles

Click here to go to the page with the dirt rides gpx files.

All routes are suitable for any street legal dual sport or adventure bike. There is no public single track or off-road riding in the hill country so all routes are ridden on public roads.

What if the weather is bad? The ride still occurs. There is a chance you may be the only rider to show up, but the ride is never cancelled. This way, no matter what the weather forecast, those riders who want to ride always have a scheduled ride.

What if there is an event (such as a rally) scheduled for that same weekend? The first Saturday ride is still on. This way those riders who aren't attending the other ride/rally have a scheduled Saturday ride they can attend.

What if someone else is organizing a day ride on Sunday? The Saturday ride is still happening. Any and all other rides are in addition to the monthly Saturday ride, not a replacement for the Saturday ride.

The first Saturday ride is never cancelled. It is always on.
I was wondering if you are still doing these monthly rides? I just purchased a 2023 Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro. Like my DR650SE and DR350S, she needs to get some dirt.

Yes, the monthly rides are still occurring.

I've got a free Saturday for a change, and was hoping some folks will be up for taking the monthly ride this Sat. morning (Sept '22). The calendar for Sept: "Kendalia, 147 miles, some dirt, beautiful low water crossing." Considering it's mostly street, I'll be on the 890R.
