I recently became aware of the Mason county war. I had no idea Johnny Ringo got his start in this area or that he lived with his Uncle, the Postmaster in Loyal Valley before making his one way trip to Arizona.

The sign neglects to say that the prisoner "Tim Williamson" was not just a friend, but that he had also raised Scott Cooley, who was an orphan.

The Koocksville store figures prominently in the war as well serving as a central meeting place of the John Clark / German Texan faction known as the vigilance committee.

I meant to get this photo last month but a funeral was in progress and they had his grave covered with a green carpet.

Continuing the theme from the prior post, the historical marker in Mason also neglected to mention that Scott Cooley was a Texas Ranger, represented the Texans in the "Hoodoo War", was an associate of the gunman, Johnny Ringo and rode with him on retaliatory raids.

He may have been poisoned while having dinner at the Nimitz hotel in Fredericksburg. I also learned that "Loyal Valley" got its name from being loyal to the Union during the Civil War. Central Texas history is not as straightforward as we were taught...
