Thanks for sharing. Your story epitomizes the phrase "The journey is the destination". Nice to pick up some tips from a veteran moto tourer...and I got my 1st dirt bike 45 years ago ;)
 
What sprocket combo were you running? That 700 mile leg home was impressive.
 
The stock sprockets on the SM are 15/41. I just change the front sprocket for the situation I'm going to encounter. For highway use, I use a 16T front and for anything that's going to be challenging, I use a 13T front. The 16T requires the plastic chain slider to be slightly modified so the sprocket can be quickly changed. The change takes less than 15 minutes.
