I have a 2007 250X that my son rides which I would love to plate so he could legally ride forest roads and do some shorter dual sport rides with me.

I bought the bike with just a bill of sale. What’s the best route to title it?

If it were titled I could get it plated, we’ve done a couple Drz e bikes, lighting kit, inspection, insurance, and then have the title changed to MC. But these bikes has titles to begin with.

Has anyone gotten a title for a non titled dirt bike?

Easiest to just do it out of state?

Call your Sheriff's Office and ask fo rthe number to their Auto Theft Unit. They should be able help you with this.
Might be similar to having a new homemade trailer inspected and VIN'd.

Do you have the MSO/MCO? Or even the paperwork from when you bought it?

You do the vin checks at the vehicle theft department not the sheriffs office. I’ve done that before on a trailer to get a bonded title.

No. If I had a mco this would be a super easy process.

Do you know the original owner? They should have the title, no?

No. And I’m sure you know that dirtbikes don’t require titles in Texas.
No, they don't for riding off road, but both the 125 and 450 I bought came with titles. Those state "for off road use only" on them, but that's what you take and get changed to a regular title once you do the conversion, inpect and insure. It makes the process a lot easier if you had one.

Ya gotta get a title somehow to get it plated. Dirtbikes can come with a title if you ask for one up front at purchase which most folks don't, and get the "certificate of origin" or something like that which is required to title it. Not sure if you can get the bonded title on a non titled bike period, but that's the question. Easiest route to then getting it plated relatively cheaply is then (bonded title, DOT tires, horn, a single mirror; use existing lights if they exist

, license plate illumination somehow, add brake light switch on rear brake only). Not sure if TX requires turn signals or not. There are cheap kits out there to do all this stuff. I did a XR650R, WR450 and TTR 225 back in CO to similar requirements.

I'd personally never buy a bike without title or MSO. Maybe a 20 year old 500 dollar bike but not newer bike. When bought from dealer they'll charge you tax and provide an offroad only title. Don't think they have a choice but to collect tax?

The moment you realize that the 2007 bike you are talking about is coming up on being 16 years old. 🤦🏼‍♂️🤣

Since you live in Lumberton, suggest you go to the Regional TxDMV office in Beaumont with your bill of sale & bike info (yr, make , model, VIN#) and see if they can pull up record if bike was ever titled - if it was you can apply for a bonded title, if it was never titled, they should be able to tell you what you need to get a title.

For those buying a dirt bike that has a title....Most people don't know the information below. I didn't until plating dirt bikes was important to you me. And the desire for clear ownership.

"The standard title fee is either $28 or $33. This depends on the county where you are titling your motorcycle."

Registration of course applies if a bike is street legal.

See box 38.

Good advice from Tom above. There are a few services where you can look up the vin to see where and if it was titled, then reach out to the previous owner to see if they will file for a lost title.

Bottom line going forward…. Never buy any bike with out a title. If a bike with out a title gets stolen, you have no proof of ownership and will never get it back.

If needed, the bonded title process isn't hard. I went through it on a 99 Dyna I bought out of a storage building, and it was way easier than people make it out to be. I've also owned a DRZ-E that was plated that way.

I’ve done bonded titles on a few things…street bikes and trailers. It’s not a hard process. Just takes a few steps.

Thanks

Seems everyone buys new bikes here and has titles.

Cheers!!
Mine don't, I just am very little help as I've never tried to title one. But I've had a bunch of them. I do wish you some luck in what you are trying to do.

Nope! Buy second hand 99% of the time.

Bought a Yamaha 250 from an individual, can’t remember now but there was an issue with the paperwork. Easiest way to resolve it was to camp out in front of the seller’s house til he came home and got him to sign an extra form or somethin. Like I said, don’t remember the details and this story is no help to you So why should I chime in?

No they do not but ok.
Serious questions:
I'm riding in National forest, load up headed home. Get stopped by Ranger, runs vin and not in my name. Questions will be asked!
My dirtbike gets stolen, call police tell them what? I have no proof of ownership. If insured, they won't pay till I have a title to surrender.

You should absolutely run a vin check on any item you buy.

But no dirt bikes (off road use) don’t require titles in Texas. A quick google search will answer this for you.
It’s very common to not have a title when buying used off road use items.

Lol it’s a public forum we are free to chime when chimes are desired.

I can do this two ways I can get a Bonded title, then get my local tax office to convert it to MC

Or I can register out of state, and convert that to Texas

This non titled off rod use dirtbike will be titled and plated within the month.

Cheers all
