There was an awesome thread on here... I can't find it to save my skin. It should be a sticky. :) Can anyone quick tell me what forms I need to sell a motorcycle?

I'm keeping the plate, I have a clear title.
 
You need the title.
The tax office goes by blue book value so you don't even need a bill of sale anymore.
 
There's also a form, printable from TXDOT, that you mail in with a check for $5, declaring that you no longer own the vehicle. That protects you if the other party gets a ticket before they get around to registering it.

And I would say get a bill of sale, and let the buyer fill in the sales amount. Despite what I often read on this site, I bought two vehicles in Tarrant County last year and, in both cases, sales tax was based on the value stated in the bill of sale. Worst case, it takes 5 minutes to type up and 1 minute to fill in the blanks & sign.
 
You need a application for Texas Certificate for Title. To be signed and dated by both seller and buyer. You also want to write down your title # for filing that you sold vehicle. And make sure you write down new owners name address and phone #. Lots of people sell things leave title open and don't even know who they sold it too. Don't do that.

*edit* Bill of Sale... I usually fill one out and have both parties sign, but the tax office doesn't even look at it. They look up the value and fill in the 130-U based on their number, not yours. It's a moot point for the seller anyway.

*edit #2* Why keep the plate? I've never kept the plate of a vehicle I've sold, but I hear of people doing it.... what's the motivation?
 
Just be sure to sign the title in the correct place it's a real pain when the title gets filled out wrong. I've sold two bikes and a truck in the last two months that part was easy. I also bought a car and a bike in that same time, the car was easy to transfer but the bikes title was signed in the wrong place by the seller(brother in-law) he also put my nick name instead of my real name plus it was an out of state title. What a real pain in the rear end that was. I had all sorts of paper work to fix that mess and about 3 trips to the tax office.
 
You can keep the plate if you want, but it cannot be transferred to another bike. Cars and trucks yes, bikes and trailers no.

It's a relatively painless process. You don't have to appear at the county tax office with the seller - what they're telling you here is really for your own protection. Fill out the transfer notification & you're covered.

Be absolutely sure that, when you write & sign your name on the back of the title, you spell it EXACTLY like on the front - ditto the certificate of title. If it's not identical, you've just created a major headache for the seller - he'll have to come back to you with a sheaf of paperwork, and he'll probably be very annoyed. Trust.

I sold a bike and had just renewed the registration. The purchaser rode on my registration for the remainder of the year and then some. Keep the plate and they are forced to register the vehicle.
 
What Don said....the state TELLS you to keep the plate.

And the plate was a vanity plate that isn't relevant to the bike, but means something to me so will look good on my garage wall.
 
is putting the title in your name the same thing as registering it in your name? We bought my boys bike from GHT last year, changed the title in to his name the first week we had the bike, but the registration sticker shows its good until November this year. Will the registration renew papers come to us because the title is in Daniels name or were we supposed to fill something else out ?
 
The registration was still good so you didn't have to pay. You probably paid some sort of title fee and maybe a county fee and sales tax. The registration will come to him when it is due.

So, the state's definition of "registration" is getting your license plates paid for and current. The renewal will come to the name on the title, at the address associated with the title.
