Wichita Mountains National Refuge in SW Oklahoma

We took a pretty cool trip to the Wichita Mountains National Refuge early October, looking for open spaces to ride. Its open / no fees unless you want a camping spot overnight, RV's only right now, no tents. Easy drive from Houston, about 6-7 hours. You can see Prairie Dogs, and Buffalo, and ride your bike up the highest mountain in OK, Mt. Scott. Good views. Pretty country. Traffic is very light. The RV Campground was booked solid though. We also visited the "Bone Museum" outside of OK City. These bones are whale bones, and YES, they do put the bones in a vat of insects, you can watch the bone stripping onsite. They also have a facility next door that does all this custom if you want it in your home.

More pics. If I was on a big cruiser, I would certianly make this a "Must Stop" now that I have been there because its FREE to just stop off during the day. I was amazed at the number of Prairie Dogs at "Prairie Dog Town". I thought it would be a situation where we may or may not see them. There are 100's of them right on the side of the road. Some pretty tame. One walked up to me so people must feed them. The Bison is right in front of us when I took that shot. People warned us. Don't walk up the Bison even though they seem tame. There are many hiking trails like this one that took us to a low water dam. About a 30 minutes walk from the parking spot. Good stop for bikers and I saw plenty of bikers.

About 20 minutes to the west is Great Plains state park which does allow tent camping. I love that are up there, thanks for posting up!
 
You need to get off the bike in the Wichitas. We rock climb there, and the hikes (scrambles) to climbing spots are pretty impressive for being in the middle of the plains.
 
Hiked up there once, but haven't yet ridden there. Really nice part of OK and worth going for anyone who doesn't believe there are mountains in the High Plains.
