OK, I'm in. I'm getting a PLB (personal locator beacon) so I won't interrupt the ride this time. Adding Quik splints to my med kit too. Nothing as embarassing as a doctor being unprepared for his own injuries. Maybe I'll have to find that link for a KLR trailer to carry a more complete kit.

bigboy,

The most current information on the 2008 Texas Adventure Ride (TAR) is posted on my web site at www.texasadventure.net

A brief history: In 2006 a couple of friends and I did a 3 day adventure ride from Austin to Langtry, TX and back. We had a great time and discovered some wonderful DS roads out in the hill country and west Texas. Based on that trip I decided to put together a ds/adventure ride in the same area. The first TAR was the last weekend in April of this year and 125 riders attended. I thought it turned out very well (at least I know I really had a great time) and based on all the positive feedback I plan to keep it going as an annual event.

You can find reports on the first annual TAR in the ds ride reports section here on TWT.

Hope you can make it for the 2008 event.

The wee will be fine for 95% of the roads. They are unpaved county public roads through the hill country. Many water crossings, some very slick with algae. Nice scenery. Check out the ride reports from last year.

The last time I was in Tellico Plains I stayed at the Cherohala Motorcycle Campground. It was new then, and has probably expanded by now to have better cabins. A really nice couple own it, and it's a good place to stay. Lots and lots of gravel roads :puke: (I hate gravel) are there that will get you to some pretty country. Most of the off-road/gravel I've done in the last few years was in NC, closer to Bryson City. There is a good road, IIRC just off the TN side of the Skyway, though (up to the falls) - the coffee hasn't kicked in enough for me to remember the name. I know the area by riding it but can't remember/don't know names! I'll try to look it up. Be sure to eat at the cafe in Tellico (the one close to the entrance to the Skyway), it's suprisingly good. There a a couple of descending radius curves on the Skyway that can catch you by surprise - the sportbike riders have marked them - when you see "SLO" written on the road, take it seriously!

Yesterday morning I could have said yes. I've been planning to take off either the second or third week in October for a ride, and yesterday decided on the second week and commited to work shifts in the third week. I'm not picking a destination, just a direction, and of course east to TN/NC is always my favorite. But I'm contemplating NM/CO or maybe AR/MO. I won't finally decide until the night before I leave when I check the Weather Channel  . It's the ride I need, not the destination!;-)

I am planning to go to the event this year, allready turned in the leave request. I know it is a long ways off, but I was looking at some camp grounds in the area, I plan to camp. One that I looked at was Morgan Shady Park, Had river front camping spots and hot showers. Has anyone had any experience with this place? where would you experienced Texas adv. riders suggest camping,to get the whole experience and fellowship of other riders? Also keep me in mind if anyone is riding down there from the DFW area, I plan on leaving a day earlyand wouldn't mind joining up with a group.

Last year several camped at South Llano River State park. It was nice, but crowded and there was no effort to get all of the ride participants located in the same general area. I am planning on camping again this year. Maybe Richard can come up with an official camp ground. I think there is a KOA or maybe the one you mentioned that is in town right on the river. It looked nice, but it was pretty much wide open. Lets see what we can come up with

I would love to ride up to Palo Duro some time, but it will be November before I could get away. October is booked solid for me, so it will have to be November for me, too. I was contemplating trucking the Sherpa to BB for T-Day weekend (5 days) but maybe we can talk Ara and Spirit into joining us up in Palo Duro, too!

I spent last T-Day weekend (4 days) up there last year, hiked >20 miles, had a coyote visit my tent, rode the switchback several times, got the Whee stuck in sand ;) ...... I was very tempted not to return home. My campsite was nice, but the washroom nearby was closed.

Junction KOA Campground
2145 Main Street
Junction, TX 76849
325-446-3138
www.junctionkoa.com

This campground is on the west side of Junction, located on the North Llano river. They offer tent camping, 4 cabins, and RV camping. Water & electricity at the camp sites. Bathrooms & showers. Laundrymat. Swimming pool and swimming in the river. Wireless internet access at most of the camp sites.

Looks like I will be able to make this trip:rider: ....will be riding my Honda 650L...

BTW I live in Boerne (off 46 east) so if anyone wants to join me for the ride up to Junction let me know............It may also be possible for me to take a pick up and trailer a couple of bikes to the start point..... but I would need someone to recommend safe place to leave my truck and trailer in Junction..although, if we are going to return to junction every day then I can leave it in the camp ground (above post)

Thanks..

I think that the KOA might be a great idea. last year the S Llano River SP was packed and I think most of the ride participant were all scattered around. I only met a few guys out there and I know there were several groups. The KOA was right down the street from the hosting motel. The only draw back that I know of , for me any way, is that the KOA looked wide open. I think I will look into staying there this year and see how it works out.

Ok, do I need my DRZ400 or my 06 Tiger? I haven't had tags on my DRZ in 3 or 4 years but I can get em. Or are we better off putting or road tires on the Tiger? I don't mind the DRZ at all but the seat doesn't do well on my seat for any amount of time. So distance = Tiger and serious dirt = DRZ.. do I flip a coin?

Depends on which routes you choose to ride. I was on my DRZ and went for the routes with the least amount of pavement. I also got a Walmart cheap atv seat pad, which helped alot.

Oops.

Broke the left hand guard and turn signal. No pictures on the second one & no (additional) damage either. However, a 25 mph tank slapper followed by a low side with a 180 degree heading change did me in for the day... :-(

This was on one of Richards's routes that went from Llano back to Junction.

By next spring, I might forget about this one and try it again... :ponder:

I plan to take two days leave. That's all I can get without a note from a doctor. Maybe I can sneak out early enough on Wednesday to ride down before dark. I'll ride down on the CB550 and let T-dub tag along on somebody's trailer. I'm thinking about hitting the dualsport roads early in the AM each day, back to Junction by noon for lunch, then hop on the CB and do the Sisters or another paved ride each afternoon. T-dub can be trailered back and the CB ridden home on Sunday. Now, if I could find a doctor who will rwrite a note, ....

Poncho,

In addition to the google search, there is a list in the ride guide. So, if you still have your ride guide from 2007, you can get the info there.

Never done this ride. I have read about it several times. I have a 06 DL 650 (V-Strom). I have just spooned on a set of Avon Distanzias and only have about 300 miles on them so I don't want to spend more money on another set of tires just yet.

I was wondering if this ride can be done on the DL with the Distanzias. Can it, huh huh? I ask because I live in the central Florida area and hate to ride all the way out there and have everyone look at me funny. :loco:

Thanks in advance for any info,
Jim

I like the sounds of the KOA. Stayed at several in NM, OK, and AR; they're usually clean and nice. And this one is on the river
If enough want to camp there, perhaps we can get a group site, maybe a group rate. (near the river:trust: )

NO problem. I rode last year with a set of Avon Gripsters mounted on a XL600R. There were several Strom's with a variety of tires that participated in the ride. The routes are consist of dirt roads with some creek crossings included. There are also some fun highway sections. Read all about it here (http://www.twtex.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17432) .

OldSchooler,

I run Tourances on my Wee and it does fine on those roads so I think the Distanzia's on your Strom will be fine.

The exception for both of us is if it rains & turns the dirt roads to mud.

I was looking on the Junction web site and found a link to the KOA. On the map of the camp ground it looks like there is a big area at one end that maybe we could get. Looks like there are three or four camp sites in an open area. Just a thought

This is looking like a LOT of fun, but I have ZERO experience in this environment. I'm looking at used bikes like the KLR, DR, XT for just this type of riding. Squeaky has given me some input too.

What's the best displacement to be looking at for this stuff for a beginner? And what gear is required to farkle before tackling a trip such as this? Based on previous ride reports, street legal is a must and it's wide open from there.

I've been following "Sherpies" build with great interest.....

I do believe we have a nice campground hot showers with about 1/2 mile of Nueces river frontage, one problem it is about 80 miles south of Junction In Camp Wood in the thick of the rides south but probably to far from activities for anyone to want to stay this trip.
Everyone is always welcome and we offer motorcyclists $5 per night tent camping always with cabins and RV full hook ups avaliable.

It sounds like a really awesome place and some place I will visit some time, but it is just too far from Junction and all of the activities there. The last thing I want to do it drink a couple of beers at the hotel parking lot and have to ride 80 miles. I think our best bet is to get several adjacent camp sites at the KOA and stay there. Perhaps in the future Richard might think about moving the ride to a Campwood base. Now that might work.

Richard has done a great job of setting up this ride in my opinion.Junction
has many more economy motels restaurants and fast food places than
Camp Wood in addition to easy access off I 10.
Camp Wood is a great place but still it is a town of 850 one gas station
only 2 restaurants open after 3:30 Two beer barns no city police and no stop lights. With only 2 motels and 2 campgrounds rooms are scarce but plenty of tent camping.
Our campground is the hosting site for 2008 T.M.R.A. Texas Motorcycle Roadriders Association state rally April 11th.-13th. and we are lucky enough to be in the center of some of the best duel-sport as well as paved roads in the state.

Ok, here is the deal. I called the KOA this morning and explained what is going on with the ride and all. They were very happy to help and I talked to the lady for a long time. I reserved site #18 this is right along the river. They will allow up too two tents per site @ 8.00 per person over two or per tent. In other words the reservation is based on two people, but if only two people stay on the site in two tents it will be 8 bucks extra. That is what I got out of it. So, I am in on #18 and if anyone wants to stay with me that is cool. I am planning on going alone, but one of my boys could end up going. I snore like a freight train so be advised. http://www.junctionkoa.com/maps.html
If you make a reservation let them know you are with my group and they will try and put us all together. My name is Ralph Lillich, but I got by Trey. That is it for now.

You need to bring a sleeping bag, towels and toiletries. If you aren't up to eating out, then you will need to bring all that junk.:)

Mad*Sparrow,

It can be as tough or as easy as you want it to be. There are 13 recommended rides that I've put together for riders to choose from. The recommended routes range from pavement only to the toughest dual sport road in Texas with everything in-between. Plus, riders are free to adjust a recommended route as much as they would like or even make up their own unique route.

12 of the 13 recommended routes are well within the capabilities of your Strom (I ride a Strom too so I'm speaking from experience).

Of course, there is no guarantee you won't drop your bike. There are, however, plenty of options for choosing a route that suites your desires.

Yep, my little riding group modified one of the routes to skip some of the pavement so we had more dirt. Once you have the guide book you can spend some time with some maps and tweak it. My recommendation would be to take one of the mostly street routes the first day, then decide on whether to be more adventurous the second based on how the first day went.

Derek,

You have to right click on each file and then save it to your hard drive. If you are clicking on the files (clicking with the left button on your mouse) and trying to open the files in your browser, it won't work. Once you have the files you want downloaded to your computer, you can open them with Mapsource or import them into your GPS unit.

I attended the Texas Adventure Ride last year and greatly enjoyed it. I was also strongly looking forward to doing it again in 2008. Now, I am being sent to Portland, Oregon, this year for mandatory training when the 2008 TAT is taking place. Thus, I will not be able to attend this year. This really bothers me because I have a new (to me anyway) DRZ400S which I had wanted to try this year instead of my V-Strom.

Is there any chance that some others out there might be up for a "Make Up" Ride in early May? Surely, there are at least 10 or 12 other riders who, like me, cannot make it during the scheduled time. I would love to use the same ride guide, stay at the same place, and basically duplicate the 2008 event that occurred a couple of weeks earlier....but in a much smaller fashion.....and with the people who could not make the main event....or with those who would like to ride it again.

Jim:

I did the TAT last year on a heavy DL-1000 Strom with the factory installed Death Wings. There were a few hairy spots here and there but several people who were on lighter, true dual-sport bikes were surprised at how well the Strom did. One older guy told me that he couldn't believe I was riding on some of those routes with such a heavy bike. I bet if I can do it on a DL-1000 with Trail Wings, you might be fine with a DL-650 with Distanzias.

I admit that I'm probably not qualified to speak to Avon Distanzias but for what it's worth, there were plenty of DL-650 Wee Stroms there last year that did great with Michelin Anakees, Metzler Tourances, and of course, Trail Wings. One of the guys who rode a Wee Strom had come from Florida and had stopped in Texas to do the TAT on his way to the Grand Canyon.

Hope this helps.

Richard, looks like great prices at Sun Valley, but??? A buddy of mine did the TAR last year and several of us from Amarillo are planning to come down this year. He stayed at Legends last year and said it was fine. How do the accomodations at the Sun Valley compare to Hills, Legends and Lazy T?

Any info would be helpful.
Thanks

Big Lefty,

I've not stayed at Sun Valley but I believe it is equivalent to the Lazy T & Hills. I haven't stayed at the Legends so I can't compare them.

At last year's TAR I stopped in at Sun Valley and introduced myself to the owner. I explained TAR to him and he was very receptive to having riders stay at his motel. He gave me a tour of the property, showing me several rooms. My impression of the rooms I saw was that they were all clean, comfortable, and the amenities were similiar to other motels in town. The owner mentioned several times that cleanliness of the rooms and property were very important to him.

For what it is worth I stayed at the Legends Inn & already booked again.
I found the place very clean & staff very helpful by offering cleaning rags for the bikes. [free] Kathy, at the desk, knew everything about Junction, which was most helpful. We did light maintenance in parking lot. [NO MESS] Coffee was hot every morning. Parking was more than enough. Pool will be open this year. Hope this helps.

Hey all! Brand new to the forum. This trip sounds awesome to me. I've had a klr for a couple years now, but have yet to take it on a trip like I always thought I would. It's totally stock with about 80% street tires on it. Is anybody from Austin going, and if so would you be interested in riding out there together/sharing a hotel room or a campsite?

I haven't gotten too far in planning yet. I think I'm driving out with a friend and we are going to split a room. However, I'm waiting to see if another family commitment is going to conflict or not. But I'm in the Austin area and I doubt I'm the only one going from around here.

Sometime in March I'll start an attendance thread like I did for the "Ride the Rio" ride and we'll have a better idea of who's going and from where.

Hi Rusty. Hope to see you there again this year. Me and another guy roomed next to you last year.

Don't know if you or anyone else would be interested, but if you would like paper map backups, and you have a Garmin GPS and have Mapsource on your computer you can map the routes out following the directions in the guide, or use the GPS files Richard provides, then use a screen capture program to capture the maps for printing. Depending on the mapset you're using, it can be alot better than what the atlas shows.

Great, just got my ride guide in the mail. Guess I'm not getting anything else done today. Now where is my copy of Roads of Texas?

I've been playing with printing from Mapsource and from Delorme. Problem is my magenta ink is acting up...so I need to clean the head on the printer I guess. The copies I got made last year from the Roads of Texas were on some tougher than normal paper and I still have some of the routes marked on those copies. The color copies weren't cheap at Kinko's but since I'm getting a second year out of them, that helps.

I may but I actually hope to be in your shoes. Ride my FJR down there and have someone trailer my DRZ 250. If not then I will trailer down and my small trailer can hold one more bike, but probably not 2. Or if someone helps me we can put some in the back of my truck also, plus I have a slightly larger trailer I can use. Of course you are going to have to let me switch bikes for a mile or so I can check out that WR.:trust:

Make sure your WR250R is street legal, you will need to be legal to ride.

Edit:
I just saw that the bike is legal in stock form. Cool bike, I have been wanting to see one in person.

Good morning folks,

It will be my first time attending this event. I have gone through the ride book and the different rides suggested and came up with the rides I want to do (even created bolt load of sequential way-points for each ride).

However, my wishes may not line up with the realities on-ground; therefore, I would appreciate if some of the veteran riders can share their advice and comments on my below outlined ride plan for a reality-check.

I ride a 12GS and can usually handle myself (and the bike) off the asphalt OK, (of course, with occasional spills). I expect to have knobbies on the bike by the ride date but I may still be on my tourances (of course, reduced psi for the DS rides).

Friday: Ride#3 + Ride#10

Sat: Ride#9 + Ride#5 (only to Llano)

I figured time lines (including fuel and meal stops) for the rides as R3: 4-5hrs , R10: 3-4 hrs , R9: 5-6 hrs , R5: 2-3 hrs to Llano

What do you guys think?

Last year I did ride 3 on the first day and a modified version of ride 6 the second day (much more dirt and a detour for gas and food). I was on a DRZ400 with 2 other folks on fairly dirt oriented bikes so we made decent time on the dirt (speed limit sort of decent).

On both days we got back to Junction between 4 and 5 in the afternoon. I think there were other folks that were able to do multiple rides each day, but my experience was that throwing in some photo ops, lunch and a gas stop that we didn't have enough time for more than one. Dealing with bump gates, retying on loose gear, accidental wrong turns, water crossings, and nice scenery all conspire to slow the pace.

Richard and I are hatching an idea to do a TAR 2008 video. It will contain contributions of video clips, photos, audio clips (interviews, etc), and whathaveyou.

What I need from riders are photos depicting the ride, the camaraderie, the thrills and spills, "Ooohs" and "oops!", scenery, and what is involved in preparations, fascinations and even trivialities (e.g. campsites, campfires, lubing chains, patching tires, donning gear, snoring, use your imagination).

I would really like submissions of good quality video that I can pick and choose clips from to intersperse throughout the production.

Sounds like a good idea. Last year two of us filmed and ended up with some good video including part of Hackberry road and some of 337. We are planning to film again this year and can send you what we end up with. You can pick what you want. If you like and I can also send you what we did last year if you want and get a collection going of last year's TAR. I think a number of folks would like a mix vid of this years event and would also help promote it.

Texas Shadow. What a great idea. I would love to have and help with Pictures and videos of the experience. My only question is; how can I convert video tape (compact) to CD/DVD or can it be done? Don't laugh!:haha: I'm an old guy and technology is moving faster than I. I do use digital cameras but I only have the video tape "Moving Picture" camcorder. Anyway I'm in on the idea. GREAT!

Glad to see someone else is in on this!
