A few weeks ago I took a trip to Ft. Hood and stopped at the memorial that the 1st Cavalry has for their fallen soldiers with Operation Iraqi Freedom. It had names and dates of all the fallen soldiers since the start of the war carved into the stone.

If you look close at one of the pics, someone left a birthday card for a soldier who had been killed (SPC Justin R. Blackwell killed 05 Aug 2007)...and that broke my heart.

Regardless of what you think of the war, just think of the soldiers and their families, so please don't post anything political or negative.

The memorial is on the big parade field (not sure of the cross streets) at the 1st Cav HQ. There is a tank close to the memorial and helicopter also on the parade field.

That is truly impressive. Thanks for posting up.

Very impressive. But then I really do like memorials to our military.
Can you get on Fort Hood as a civy?

You shouldn't have any problems getting on-post as long as you have your driver's license with you and insurance card - IF - you are going in your car. (when you head in the Main gate, you'll see a sign for "visitors" and you can ask for a guest pass for the day)

If traveling on-post in on your cycle, it's a different story. You definitely need to have on the standard safety gear (full-fingered gloves, helmet, over the ankle boots, long pants, long sleeve jacket, reflective safety vest or safety belt), MSF safety card, and then at the Main gate head to the "visitors" entry.

If you don't have the MSF safety card, they probably won't let you on-post. And sometimes even with all the safetly gear on and MSF card, I've heard if you don't have a DoD sticker attached to the bike, they won't let you on-post on a bike.

Motorcycle safety has become a 'hot' issue lately on post. :rider:

Can a ex-squid join in and say thanks for posting this. For bringing a tear to my eye & lump in my throat.

Thanks for posting this info. I've been over Killeen way a few times visiting the nephew (227th Aviation Reg.) but never went on the base. Looks like I need to go have a look next time.

This is to tb86. I saw your post about the pictures that you took of the Memorial, and the pictures you took. The picture you took of the birthday card for Spc. Justin Blackwell, that's my brother-in-law. My husband and I are the ones to put that card and rose there. My husband is also in the army, and is stationed at Ft. Hood with 13COSCOM. Justin's birthday was July 18th, and we took the card and rose. We also take roses for holidays, as well as for the soldier that was killed with him, who's name is also on the memorial with Justin's, PFC Jeremy Bohannon.

p35magpie, my deepest condolences go out to you and your family; to PFC Jeremy Bohannon's family; and all the other families who lost someone.

I hope you didn't mind me publishing the photo of the birthday card and the rose (if you do, please send me a message and I’ll remove it), but I wanted everyone who saw the picture to know that every name carved in that stone has someone that cares and remembers them. Your tribute to your brother in-law is something that will always be in my memory.

Your brother-in-law, SPC Justin Blackwell, PFC Jeremy Bohannon and the other soldiers, will never be forgotten.

I am so sorry for your loss. Please tell your husband and all his comradesin arms thank you for me.

I spent 6 years there as a member of the 49th Armored Brigade with the Texas National Guard back in the '70's. It has been a long time since I have visited the post. It sounds like it is time to go back.

Thank you all so much. I don't mind at all that you posted that picture. I'm actually surprised that you got it, because usually I think they take things that are left on the memorial, off after a day or so. You must have been there the day after we put it on there. But I don't mind at all.

p35magpie: Your brother-in-law and all our troops remain in our hearts and in our prayers. Many good men and women have given the ultimate as members of our Armed Forces. Many more still CM! Two of our sons and two of our sons-in-law have served over in the sand box. and continue to serve on active duty.
