When I was a kid in the 60's and 70's we called them corn field spiders. They would string their webs across the rows of corn about 4 to 6 feet high. When we would play in the corn fields, running between the rows, you would not see them until you ran right into the web and had a face or chest full of spider.
As we got older and started hunting in East Texas, we would find them about the same height with their webs strung between two trees fairly close together. Same scenario, walking stealthfully, looking for our prey and then, BAM Someone would be screaming and jumping around like a cat with tape on its feet, trying desperately to get the spider off.
Not really sure what the scientific name is but we called them, Corn Field Spiders.
